Palletforce-owned Dobbs Logistics is reaping the rewards of adopting three new Volvo FH 500 with I-Save Globetrotter XL 6×2 tractor units, noting substantially improved fuel economy versus trucks from a rival manufacturer.

Having previously entrusted its HGV supply to a different marque, the Hastings-based operator initially decided to explore Volvo’s innovative turbo compound technology thanks to a recommendation from a nearby fellow haulier. And the vehicles, supplied by Jack Nutley, Truck Sales Executive at MC Truck & Bus, have made an immediate positive impact.

Lynton Manser, Director, Dobbs Logistics, says: “We’d heard excellent first-hand feedback about Volvo’s I-Save package. When the time came to bring some new models onto the fleet, Volvo was one of the key contenders on our list and soon after our initial discussions we quickly concluded that it was time to try something new.

“So far, that decision has proven the correct one – though the trucks have only been with us a short while they’re already yielding as much as two extra miles per gallon versus the tractor units they replaced. Across their time with us, that should result in a significant cost saving that certainly won’t go unnoticed.”

Equipped with a 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission, the new Volvo FH with I-Save trucks feature an ultra-efficient D13TC Euro-6 Step E engine, delivering 500 hp and a peak torque of 2,810 Nm. Intelligent software, including Volvo’s map-based predictive cruise control, I-See, and I-Cruise with I-Roll, enhance fuel efficiency further.

The vehicles also benefit from an equally impressive interior specification – in addition to a heated and suspended driver’s seat and leather upholstery, a Drive+ package adds dual armrests, electrically controlled air conditioning and an adjustable steering wheel with neck tilt. The spacious Globetrotter XL cabs also include a 33-litre fridge/freezer, two bottle holders and a 50mm premium mattress protector.

Volvo’s intelligent overnight air conditioning system – I-Park Cool – helps keep the cabs at the perfect temperature overnight for Dobbs Logistics’ drivers, whatever the weather, while having zero impact on fuel consumption.

“Driver comfort is one of our key priorities and I’m pleased to report – especially having driven one of the new tractor units down to Italy myself – these trucks have more than hit the mark,” adds Manser. “We have one driver in the business with more than 20 years of experience driving other makes – his immediate feedback was that he absolutely loves the Volvo product from top to bottom.”

Safety and efficiency are further enhanced by Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning systems, while driver visibility is aided thanks to the inclusion of Side Collision Avoidance Support, a GSR-compliant rear-mounted camera and LED headlights which automatically adjust according to ambient light conditions.

Expected to cover up to 160,000km annually, the trucks will face a mixed schedule, typically working locally during the daytime on trunking operations before driving overnight to Dobbs Logistics’ hub in Burton-Upon-Trent. The FHs will also be used for regular passage across the Channel, completing general haulage work throughout Europe as required.

The vehicles – supplied on a lease agreement with Volvo Financial Services – will remain in the business for three years. They’re backed by Volvo Gold Contracts including preventive maintenance and repairs to guarantee Dobbs Logistics complete peace of mind, as well as a comprehensive and personal service.

Founded in 1961, family firm Dobbs Logistics offers a range of logistics and haulage services including full and part loads, abnormal loads and secure warehousing.
