More than 200 guests attended the RHA’s Parliamentary Reception at the Palace of Westminster on 21 January. Operators were joined by parliamentarians, trade associations and other key stakeholders as the Association launched its vision for roads investment which it says would help the Government deliver on its mission to grow the economy.
Moreton Cullimore, RHA Chairperson said in his keynote that it will be transport firms moving construction materials and component parts to support the Government’s housebuilding drive. Similarly, it will be operators helping facilitate decarbonisation of the energy grid by moving wind turbines, solar panels, cabling and other vital components – and they’ll need the road network to do it.
“A serious plan for economic growth needs to include a plan for growth in our road infrastructure. Road haulage is the facilitator industry, and it needs support in order to continue its job of supporting our economy,” he said.
Lilian Greenwood, Future of Roads Minister said the Government is committed to improving roads and infrastructure to drive growth. She thanked the RHA for its work on improving facilities and said the industry needs to attract more people.
Bill Esterson MP, Energy Security and Net Zero Committee Chair – and former shadow roads minister – paid tribute to the sector and said the people in the industry play a vital role in keep the country going.
Rachel Taylor MP and chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Freight and Logistics (APPG) explained the work they’re doing on tackling rising freight crime. She said the industry is vital for delivering economic growth.
