County Cork’s Tony O’Mahony Agri Plant Hire & Haulage has taken delivery of a Volvo FH16 750 6×2 tractor unit continuing its long-standing relationship with the manufacturer which dates back nearly 20 years.

Supplied by Gerard Sheehan, Sales Executive at McCarthy Commercials, the new truck replaces a 2016 plate FH16 in the customer’s fleet, meaning 13 of its 14 commercial vehicles remain Volvo-supplied.

Diarmuid O’Mahony, Transport Manager at Tony O’Mahony Agri Plant Hire & Haulage, says: “We’ve been buying Volvos for two decades now, and we’re consistently impressed with the product quality, dealer support and driving performance. I honestly couldn’t see myself buying anything else at this point. We’ve already placed an order for two new Volvo mid-lifts for next year, as we continue to grow our fleet to meet the demands of our varied business.

“Given our workload, having a truck that can meet all our needs is invaluable. From heavy haulage with low loaders, to transporting tankers and tippers, and supporting our agricultural work, the FH16 handles it all with ease.”

The customer’s new truck – plated for up to 80-tonne operation – is powered by a Euro-6 D16K Step E engine, which delivers an impressive 750 hp and a peak torque of 3,550 Nm. This is paired with an automated 12-speed I-Shift gearbox, equipped with Crawler gears to help the truck pull away from a standstill with very heavy loads.

The vehicle has also been specified with Volvo Dynamic Steering, an ultra-responsive steering system designed to lessen driver steering force by up to 85%, helping increase road safety and reduce driver fatigue. The system combines conventional hydraulic power steering with an electric motor fitted to the steering gear, offering perfect stability and control at all speeds.

“We first experienced Volvo’s Dynamic Steering in 2021, and it’s been a game-changer,” adds O’Mahony. “The precision and ease it brings to handling make long days on the road far less tiring. We’ve been so impressed that it was a no-brainer to include it on our new FH16 750, and we’ve also specified it on two new Volvos due to arrive with us in 2025.”

The FH16 sports Tony O’Mahony’s sleek black livery as well as Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels. Its spacious Globetrotter XL cab has been fitted out with a fridge, microwave, smart TV, and leather upholstery to ensure a comfortable working environment, complemented by full air suspension.

Tony O’Mahony’s latest addition to its fleet will be tasked with a busy and varied working schedule. Typically operating in Munster, though with occasional trips further across Ireland and also into the UK, the truck will transport tankers, plant and agricultural equipment and aggregates. It is expected to clock up to 100,000 km a year, working up to seven days a week.
