Flintshire-based, Edge Transport has marked its 85th anniversary in business with the arrival of a Volvo 26-tonne FE 6×2 rigid chassis – the latest of a number of Volvo truck deliveries to Edge Transport this year.
Supplied by Dave Hill, Customer Solutions Manager at Thomas Hardie Commercials Ltd, the FE is powered by Volvo’s Euro 6 D8K engine rated at 320hp. Behind this is a 12-speed, I-Shift automated manual transmission system driving a single reduction axle with a ratio of 3.36:1. The 5,800mm wheelbase, rear air suspension chassis is fitted with curtainside bodywork by Tiger Trailers, a D’Hollandia fold-away tail lift and finished with a special 85-year anniversary livery.
The new FE was also specified with Volvo’s Comfort Cab, which offers extra space that can be equipped with a bed for one person or be used as office space with extra storage compartments. The Volvo FE stands out from other city and regional distribution trucks with its streamlined cab and standout safety features and takes its place among the highest quality vehicles in its class.
Volvo trucks make up all, but two of Edge Transport’s 35-strong fleet. The firm’s 18 tractor units contain both Volvo FH and FM models in 6×2 pusher axle format. These are double-shifted on both overnight Palletline hub trucks and daytime general haulage duties. The varied rigid fleet includes 6×2 and 4×2 chassis with maximum weight capabilities from 26 to 7.5 tonnes.
Volvo’s FE and FL ranges cover the latter requirements, with a total of nine 18 tonners forming its backbone. Edge Transport’s new Volvo arrival will assist with its Palletline deliveries or collections, in addition to the company’s increasing general haulage requirements.
Founded in 1933 by Alfred Edge in Chester, Edge Transport is still owned and operated by the third generation of the same family. The company’s association with Volvo trucks goes back to the 1980s and its first truck from Thomas Hardie Commercials Ltd arrived in 2012. Edge Transport’s Volvo fleet are all procured on contract hire for five-year period and delivered with full life, Volvo Gold Service Contracts.
Opened in May 2015, Edge Transport’s state-of-the-art, purpose built depot and warehouse premises in Deeside represent a superb model for 21st century operations. Located next door to Thomas Hardie Commercials Ltd.’s Deeside depot, the firm’s repair and maintenance works are done overnight to minimise impact of daily operations.
