Recycling experts, McCarthy Marland of Bristol, are making good use of Volvo Truck’s ultra-agile FL-250 rigid chassis for its refuse work, maximising the amount of waste it can carry while negotiating narrow country lanes.

After scouting around for a new, reliable refuse vehicle, the company originally purchased the 4×2 rigid, 16-tonne vehicle with rear air suspension after hearing positive feedback about Volvo. The vehicle is used for waste services throughout Somerset and neighbouring Dorset.

Supplied by Wayne Bryant Transport Solutions Executive at Wales & West Truck & Bus Ltd, the FL rigid is powered by a D8K six cylinder 7.7-litre engine developing 250hp at 2100rpm. Fitted with Farid refuse collection bodywork, the Euro-6 truck was specified with a Day Cab, medium height chassis, six-speed I-Sync automated gearbox and a 60-month Volvo Gold Service Contract.

Ben Padfield, Transport Supervisor at McCarthy Marland’s Westcombe Waste site says, “Volvo has a very good reputation, the one being used in Bristol has been very reliable and perfect for the job. Volvo is a premium brand truck, renowned for its build quality and reliability.”

Specified in Winter White, the cab comes with tinted windows, electrically-heated main mirrors with a wide angle mirror on both sides and a kerb mirror on the passenger side, adjustable headlights and two amber beacons directly mounted to the cab roof.

Ben continues: “It’s a smart vehicle that ticks all the boxes. The FL-250 is a slightly smaller size, yet it doesn’t seem to have compromised on what it can hold. It has a good sized body and carriesa decent amount of waste while still being a fairly small truck, which makes it manageable for the country lanes down here.”
