Fermoy-based South Coast Logistics has taken delivery of five new Volvo FM 460 6×2 tractor units, helping to facilitate the company’s ongoing expansion.
Supplied by Michael McCarthy, Sales Director at McCarthy Commercials, the new trucks join an 85-strong commercial vehicle fleet. They will operate primarily in the south of Ireland, typically across the province of Munster, working on bulk ADR assignments.
Damien Healy, Director at South Coast Logistics, says: “We’ve grown dramatically over the last decade and as a result, our fleet has had to undergo significant transformations. Given our prior experience with Volvos within our fleet, we have an acute understanding of the exceptional quality and reliability that comes with these new FMs.
“We’re very much looking forward to seeing just how well the trucks perform across the next 12 months.”
The company’s new Lemon Glow FMs – finished in enhanced factory paint and with Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels – are powered by Euro-6 compliant Step E engines, which can produce 460 hp and a peak torque of 2,300 Nm.
The tractor units’ innovative engines are paired with Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox technology and I-See predictive cruise control. This works to yield further sustainability and operational efficiency gains through perfectly timed gearshifts and active speed management.
The trucks are each mounted with a spacious Globetrotter cab, featuring several Volvo optional packages. These include a Drive package, adding fully electronic air conditioning with sun sensor, dual armrests on the driver’s seat and an additional storage drawer.
A one person Living package also adds extra rear cab storage, a bottle holder and a cab parking heater.
From the vehicles’ air-suspended driver seats occupants benefit from a Volvo Media package featuring a high performance 12” fully dynamic instrument cluster.
To boost safety, the vehicles are supplied with reverse and passenger side mirror cameras, as well as Forward Collision Warning with Advanced Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning systems. These are complemented by Volvo’s distinctive V-Shaped LED headlamps to ensure South Coast Logistics’ drivers a clear view of the road.
“Volvo is a very popular brand amongst our drivers,” adds Healy. “I even had a few of the guys come to me to ask in person if I could do anything to make sure they got put in these new FMs. Given how hard our drivers work, if they’re happy then we’re happy.”

The customer’s new Volvo FM tractor units are expected to cover 100,000 km annually.
