Britain’s largest Mercedes-Benz Dealer has supplied a pair of Actros tractor units to Viridor, one of the UK’s leading recycling, resource and renewable energy companies, to support its West Sussex County Council contract.

Both 2545 StreamSpace models, they have state-of-the-art, 330 kW (450 hp) straight-six engines which drive through smooth Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmissions, and are additionally fitted with hydraulic systems which power their new, Legras walking floor trailers.

Gary Elms, Viridor’s South-West Regional Vehicle & Plant Engineer, who is responsible for a fleet of more than 300 commercial vehicles and plant, ordered the new 44-tonners from Rygor after trialling one of the Dealer’s demonstration units for two weeks.

“I know from previous experience that Mercedes-Benz vehicles are reliable and fuel efficient” he said. “With an aspiration to reduce our carbon footprint and become 20% more efficient in terms of the fossil energy we use, fuel economy and lower emission vehicles were an important part of our decision.

“Also key to the order was the Dealer’s backup support, service network and customer care, which has been excellent, as well as a comfortable and well equipped cab for our drivers.”

With its focus on recycling and recovery, Viridor is committed to all three aspects of sustainability – environmental, social and economic. The company serves more than 100 local authorities and thousands of private sector customers across the UK, from a total of 320 facilities nationwide.
