Visitors to the show, which takes place at Hillhead Quarry near Buxton, Derbyshire between the 28th and 30th June, will be able to inspect a top-of-the-range FH16-750 tractor unit, an FM 8×4 tipper fitted with a lightweight, insulated aggregate body to Tarmac specification by PPG and the aforementioned five-axle 10×6 tipper. The latter will be exhibited with a 27m³ Meiller heavy-duty, steel tipper body featuring over-cab protection.
The factory-built, five-axle Volvo FMX Tridem 10×6 is equipped with twin front steering axles, one of which is also driven, and an air-suspended, double-drive bogie, with an additional air-suspended tag-axle, which also steers.
Maximum gross vehicle weight is 56-tonnes, when used for 100% off-road applications or outside of the UK. The FMX Tridem 10×6 is available with a rear bogie triple-axle rating of up to 36 tonnes on Volvo’s latest air suspension, which is designed specifically for construction applications.
The factory-built FMX Tridem 10×6, which is also available in 10×4 configuration, is particularly well suited for a wide range of off-road mining and quarrying applications, from tippers to high capacity concrete mixers.
Other suitable specialist and off-highway applications for the factory-built FMX Tridem 10×6 and 10×4 configurations include airport fire trucks, sky-lifts and use as a crane carrier for heavy-lifting duties.
In addition to the Volvo FMX, Volvo FM N3 On-Road specification trucks, FH and Volvo FH16, the Volvo Trucks construction truck range also encompasses the Volvo FL 4×4, with four-wheel drive and a GVW of up to 18 tonnes, and the Volvo FE for tipper, truckmixer and platform body with crane / grab applications, which is available as a rigid to a maximum GVW of 26 tonnes.
Since 2015, Volvo Trucks has launched a full range of innovative construction industry transport solutions, all of which are designed to optimise productivity, reduce downtime and enhance driver performance and comfort.
These include the class leading, driver-friendly, automated 12-speed I-Shift gearbox with crawler gears, which is available for use with the latest Euro-6 Step C, 13-litre D13K and 16-litre D16K engines, rated between 420 and 750hp, in the Volvo FM, Volvo FMX, Volvo FH and Volvo FH16.
Volvo I-Shift with crawler gears is a world first for a new generation automated gearbox in a truck.
With the new crawler gears, the truck can drive at speeds as low as 0.5-2 km/h. This helps the driver and overall safety during precision manoeuvring when working on construction and Heavy Haulage duties – from the slow pace requirements of ‘kerbing’ with a truckmixer, to negotiating tight access with an oversize or extra-long, abnormal load. Alternatively, it is now possible to specify two reverse crawler gears to facilitate, precision slow speed manoeuvring at high gross weights.
Volvo Tandem Axle Lift makes it possible for the driver to disengage and raise the second driven axle on a double-drive configuration truck while the truck is stationary and unloaded. This aids manoeuvrability and provides the possibility of reducing fuel consumption when the truck is driven unloaded. Driving with the second driven axle raised decreases the turning circle by approximately one metre, thus again improving manoeuvrability and reducing tyre-wear.
As in previous years, Volvo Trucks is sharing the stand (Y5) of Volvo Construction Equipment and Volvo Penta, whose generator will provide power for the facilities there.
