Campaigners are warning that allowing these ‘MEGA TRUCKS’ into Britain would cause further safety risks and create worse congestion that there already is.
Mega Trucks can measure up to 82ft in length and weigh up to 60 tonnes. The current draft legislation being considered by European parliament would permit these lorries to cross international borders for the first time.
The proposals have prompted transport groups to raise concern and awareness that these vehicles could pose a real threat to pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. Further worry was the impact on urban and smaller roads.
Current HGVs are blamed for the worst of our congestion in the UK in urban areas and are significantly more likely to be involved in fatal accidents than other vehicles.
