According to Fleetband Warranty Services, many large commercial vehicle manufacturers usually offer only a one year warranty, as standard. However, as soon as a vehicle falls out of the main dealer environment, it gets forgotten about, in so far as warranty coverage is concerned.
For businesses investing in a van or truck from outside the manufacturer dealership network, they might not be offered any kind of extended warranty cover at all. As extended warranty cover on commercial vehicles is not an accepted norm the way it is in the car market, it just gets overlooked or, worse still, is often quite simply never discussed.

If a business is relying on shipping goods up and down the M4 every day and a vehicle suffers a significant failure, resulting in it being off the road, then the business faces a potential loss of revenue and possible contractual costs for delivery failure. Furthermore, the business may have to find the money to cover the parts and labour, required to fix the problem. That’s a horrible position to be in.
“Many businesses buying second hand commercial vehicles do so because it makes more financial sense than buying new vehicles. That being the case, it is likely that budgetary issues formed a very important part of their decision making process. Now, every business has to work with their own cash-flow issues and financial constraints, but anyone who buys a used commercial vehicle is probably going to be relying on that vehicle to deliver what they need for their business – to meet the needs it was bought to address.
“Most second hand cars come with some kind of extended warranty. But most used commercial vehicles come with little or no such coverage. If your car breaks down it is rarely more than a minor annoyance but if your commercial vehicle breaks down, it can threaten the continuance of the business.
“We believe that everyone in this market should be looking at how they can get the level of warranty cover they require.”
